CityLab Catalyst: Business Innovation for Social Impact
// CityLab
Hey! My name is Tawni Johnson. I am an MA/MBA Design Leadership graduate student at Johns Hopkins University and Maryland Institute College of Arts. This semester (Spring I 2025), I am taking CityLab Catalyst: Placemaking Challenge/Urban Immersion Fieldwork. Over the next 8 weeks, I will investigate how we might develop programming and experiences to promote healthy connections between nature (Chattahoochee River) and surrounding BIPOC communities.
I am excited to share how urban communities are using the Chattahoochee River and what innovations can be made to ensure that this water source is accessible to the communities closest to it.
Join my journey by visiting my CityLab fieldwork weekly updates and by following my CityLab leadership journey. I have included key background information on my project below to give you a starting point!
Thank you for your curiosity.

Chattahoochee River
The Chattahoochee River, runs 430 miles from the Blue Ridge Mountains in Georgia through Alabama and Florida, is a crucial natural resource to the southeastern states. Historically, the Chattahoochee River gave traction to Atlanta's growth by providing water, transportation, and power for mills and factories (New Georgia Encyclopedia). Today, the river remains a vital source of drinking water, recreation, and biodiversity (U.S. Geological Survey).
NEIGHBORHOOD SPOTLIGHT
Bankhead
Bankhead, a neighborhood in Atlanta, was named after Bankhead Highway, an early 20th-century route honoring Alabama Congressman John H. Bankhead (GPB.org). By the mid-20th century, demographic shifts saw white residents move to the suburbs while Black families settled in Bankhead, facing economic challenges due to redlining and disinvestment (Storymaps.Arcgis.com). Despite hardships, Bankhead became a hip-hop, bringing up influential artists such as T.I. and bringing life to the Bankhead Bounce. Today, revitalization efforts like Microsoft's Westside campus, Westside Park, and the Bellwood Quarry bring new opportunities and access but also a rise in the impact of gentrification. (canopyatlanta.org).
Bellwood Quarry & Chattahoochee River Connection:
- Quarry transformed into a 2.4 billion-gallon reservoir, Atlanta's emergency water supply.
- Connected to the Chattahoochee River via a 5-mile tunnel system, ensuring water reserves for 30+ days.

What Water Means to Me
Growing up, water was a place of connection and community. I remember summers in the backyard pool my dad built and running from one neighborhood pool to another with friends in middle school. The pool was where we shared snacks, laughter, and life lessons about boys — mostly learned the hard way.
He would wake us before sunrise, in frigid temperatures, uncover his boat, and set off to the San Joaquin Delta, hoping to bring home the weekend's catfish dinner. Fishing taught me patience—finding joy in stillness, knowing that the reward would soon come.
The ocean is where I find peace, watching the sun and moon reflect off its soft waves. It's where I feel free to dream and imagine the endless possibilities that flow in and out of my mind. Have you ever taken a deep breath of salty ocean air?
Water is cleansing, boundless, and emotional.
